Federico has just come out of a neuropsychiatric hospital and begins to write a novel in which a painting teacher falls in love with Mercedes, one of his students. After a hospital inmate draws Mercedes on a sheet identical to how he imagined her, Federico begins to become obsessed with this character, confusing reality with fiction, to the point of embarking on a desperate search to find his beloved.
