In the heart of Sardinia lies a table mountain: difficult to access, deserted, and barren. Here live hundreds of feral horses of an ancient breed – and among them, a quirky loner, the last of a long line of sheep and goat herders. The Giara di Gesturi volcanic plateau, with its cork oaks and lakes, is one of the world's last landscapes where feral horses gallop freely. Rain floods the meadows in winter, and during the droughts in summer, the shallow, temporary lakes dry up completely.
