Because Petrus was the only son, he decided to manage his father's sago plantation. After three years of migrating and attending education in the TNI-AD, Maria applied for leave to the Commander to return to her hometown, meet her mother and two younger siblings to relieve her longing for them, after a few days of Maria's return home, her mother fell ill and eventually died.
