Jacques and Odile Paugnont, a middle-class couple, lead a monotonous existence in the Paris suburbs. One day, a promotional offer at a local supermarket allows them to acquire a couple of friends. This guarantees lively evenings, hearty laughter, and deep discussions that are sure to dispel the boredom of everyday life. Whenever they feel like it, Jacques and Odile take Guy and Juliette out of their closet, two unemployed people who have exhausted their benefits and are forced to sell their friendship to survive. But as the days go by, the Paugnonts become more demanding, even cruel, towards their new "friends"...
