
At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Liu Zongxiang, the land tycoon of Hankou, laid a solid foundation for the formation and development of Hankou by building roads, demolishing city walls, repairing public dikes, and purchasing unowned official land that had not yet been silted up in the back lake. But the elite who built Hankou danced with the devil who might devour the city.
